Black split birds (referred to as split) will have black coloring, but will carry one copy of the lavender gene and are able to pass it to their offspring.
We have been selecting toward blacks and will only send black chicks, however they have the potential to produce lavender chicks. As we continue to work with this variety, it is our goal to have a pure black line.
Chicks may potentially have some leakage, as we are currently working on improving this flaw. Please note that chicks may hatch with black legs, they will turn yellow over time, typically around 8-12 weeks.
Please note that quality Wyandotte's take longer to mature, but are well worth the wait! It's typical for hens to start producing between 7-10 months of age. Wyandotte's shape and feather pattern are not fully developed until approximately 18 months. Our birds in the photos average between 12-24 months.
